Here’s the genius of this, if it isn’t apparent: to get ambient light from a headlamp, most people stick a diffuser on their headlamp, which was producing a focused beam. The thing is, LED light is by nature diffuse, and people focus this using a lens. What Josh did here was put the lens on a pliable dome of silicone, which allows you to move the focusing lens away from the LED, giving you diffuse light.
Brilliant.
